Laser ray tracing in a parallel arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement hydrocode

ALE-AMR is a new hydrocode that we are developing as a predictive modeling tool for debris and shrapnel formation in high-energy laser experiments. In this paper we present our approach to implementing laser ray tracing in ALE-AMR. We present the basic concepts of laser ray tracing and our approach to efficiently traverse the adaptive mesh hierarchy.

Adaptive Mesh Refinement and Superconvergence for Two-Dimensional Interface Problems

Adaptive mesh refinement and the Börgers’ algorithm are combined to generate a body-fitted mesh which can resolve the interface with fine geometric details. Standard linear finite element method based on such body-fitted meshes is applied to the elliptic interface problem and proven to be superclose to the linear interpolation of the exact solution. Based on this superconvergence result, a maxi...

Three-Dimensional Adaptive Mesh Refinement Simulations of Point-Symmetric Nebulae

Previous analytical and numerical work shows that the generalized interacting stellar winds model can explain the observed bipolar shapes of planetary nebulae very well. However, many circumstellar nebulae have a multipolar or point-symmetric shape. With two-dimensional calculations, Icke showed that these seemingly enigmatic forms can be easily reproduced by a two-wind model in which the confi...

Three Dimensional Adaptive Mesh Refinement on a Spherical Shell for Atmospheric Models with Lagrangian Coordinates

One of the most important advances needed in global climate models is the development of atmospheric General Circulation Models (GCMs) that can reliably treat convection. Such GCMs require high resolution in local convectively active regions, in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Our research is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach involving atmospheric science, computer sci...

Accurate interface-tracking for arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian schemes

preprint numerics no. 3/2008 norwegian university of science and technology trondheim, norway We present a new method for tracking an interface immersed in a given velocity field. The method is particularly relevant to the simulation of unsteady free surface problems using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. The new method has been constructed with two goals in mind: (i) to be ab...
